According to a Forbes Magazineย ย (5/20/13) ย article, seniors are the fastest growing consumers of social media today.
With that in mind, The Bristol Township Senior Center is now offering its members the opportunity to learn about ย social media, ย its benefits, and how they can use it, ย according to center manager Bonnie Worth.

“Were going to be on Twitter, YouTube, ย Facebook, and any other social media program relevant to the programs we offer here,” Worth said.
The Forbes report, which also cites research conducted by the Pew Research Centerย in 2010,ย points out seniors over the age of 74 are ย the fastest growing social media demographic currently.
Worth sees offering classes and training ย as a laudable goal to achieve ย for the center and its members.

Additionally students from ITT Tech have been volunteering their time at the center helping members ย connect with family and friends on sites such as Twitter and Facebook, Worth said. ย The students have been helping us create a YouTube video along with helping some of our members start accounts on various social media sites, according to Worth.
The center, which offers an array of opportunities for ย locals to participate in center activities, wants seniors in the area to become more familiar with activities offered there, Worth said.

“We want increase the center’s presence on social media,” she said.
Judy Cohen and Sandy Kane, volunteers at the center, ย agreed there is this idea out there that baby boomers, once they retire, are just sitting around ย passing the days with family and that’s not the case they say.
“We’re young at heart and that’s all that matters,” Cohen said.

In addition to educating members about the uses of social media, and adding to their own presence on those platforms, ย The Bristol Township Senior Center offers programming to help deal with the challenges of arthritis, diabetes, and an exercise program specifically geared for those experiencing challenges with balance and walking.
The center is open to anyone 55 or older and membership costs $15.00 ย yearly according to the centersย website
