Despite pleas from staff, parents and students, family & consumer science (FCS) classes have been cut from the Neshaminy School District as part of the new budget approved Tuesday.

District officials have previously told taxpayers the reason behind the cuts is not due to finances, but enhancing other areas of curriculum. Superintendent Robert Copeland previously said teachers who taught the FCS classes would be reassigned and the course curriculum would be spread throughout other core classes. Copeland also said he would like to see more focus on the arts and debate.

Virgina Hartsfield, a Maple Point Middle School FCS teacher, said in early June that administrators were “uninformed” about the value of the classes and curriculum maps and papers did not help.

Staff members said the class taught students lessons on everything from babysitting to balancing a checkbook.
