How did a backpack in school cause bomb scare?

It’s a question that many asked last week after police were called to Pennwood Middle School in Lower Makefield for reports of an “unattended backpack” last Thursday. The Philadelphia Bomb Squad was even alerted, according to a county dispatcher.

Lower Makefield police Captain Thomas Roche explained to LevittownNow.com on Monday what triggered the scare.

Roche said students at Pennwood bring their backpacks to school and place them in there lockers, where they are to stay until the end of the day. However, a teacher spotted one at around noon in a students bathroom and found it odd.

“They must have thought it looked out of place,” the captain said.

Citing what district spokesperson Ann Langtry last week called “normal protocol” police were notified and called to the school on Makefield Road.

“The students were pouring out of the school as our officers arrived,” Roche said. Around that time, a student alerted officials that it was his bag causing the scare, he added.

Shortly after, police confirmed the bag was not a “safety threat,” according to the district. In less than an hour, the school day had resumed.

Roche said the bomb squad did not end up responding to the school, and no charges will be filed in connection with the incident.
