That question is what ย De’Ana Grogan is taking on in her quest to travel to South Africa for what she describes as the “opportunity of a life time.”
Grogan, a ย 20- year-old ย Croydon native, ย scholarship winning student now attending Mansfield University (as a biology major), is in the process of trying to raise money in order to go across the world for ย an ย internship at the African Conservation Experience (ACE).ย Already accepted to the program, she will work at two different sites this Summer from June 25 to July 24.
The first site ย in Phola, she will get hands on experience performing veterinary work,ย integratingย an approach to predator conservation.

The second project takes place at Khulula Care for the Wild Center. There her efforts will involve hand rearing, care and nutrition of varied species on a game reserve and nature estate according to the ACE ย website.
“It’s the perfect opportunity ย for people who want to pursue a career in animal care and it’s want to do with my life…once I graduate from Mansfield I plan on attending vet school and after that ย I want to open an animal shelter,” said Grogan.

The challenge for Grogan is the study abroad program costs approximately $10,000 and she, doesn’t have “that kind of money” as she puts it, but that hasn’t stopped her at all.
She has raised, about half of the cost with beef and beer events and will use her own money from working as a veterinarianย technician but is still about $5,000 short so she’s reaching out to the community hoping to gain support for her vision quest.
A ย “Get De’Ana to Africa Earth Day” raffle is going to be held on April 22. ย Tickets are being sold for 10.00 with a potential grand prize of ย $5000.00. ย The winner of the drawing ย will be determined ย by the Pennsylvania ย daily night ย number drawn on ย at 7 p.m EST.

Asked if she had a backup plan if the raffle didn’t raise enough to cover all her expenses, Grogan said confidently, ย If I don’t get there this Summer, I will the next.”
Her pitch, “just imagine being part of making someones dream come true…how many people can say they helped in making that happen for someone?”
