Falls Township police confirmed one suspect was dead and a getaway driver was in custody following a robbery gone wrong.

Lt. Hank Ward told reporters that a suspect entered the Pennsbury Pharmacy at 8545 New Falls Road shortly before 10 a.m. armed with a shotgun. The suspect jumped the counter and was shot when a clerk fired his own handgun at the would-be robber.

The suspect dropped to the ground and was later pronounced dead inside the store, Ward said.

The getaway driver, who was in a green minivan stolen out of New Jersey, didn’t appear to be aware of the shooting inside the pharmacy and was arrested by officers responding to the shooting, the police official said.

The clerk was not injured and it was unclear if customers were in the store when the attempted robbery happened, Ward stated.

Nearby Pennsbury High School was not under threat when police responded to the call, an officer on the scene said.

About 10 minutes after the shooting call came over the police radio, an ambulance was seen driving away from the scene without its emergency lights flashing.

The owner of the store was taken in the passenger seat of a police van to the station for questioning, Ward confirmed to LevittownNow.com.

Falls and Bucks County detectives were called at the scene and conducting the investigation. The county’s large mobile crime scene truck pulled up about an hour after the shooting.

A press conference by police is planned for Friday afternoon.

Police are on the scene of a shooting at a New Falls Road pharmacy.

Falls Township police swarmed the Pennsbury Pharmacy in the 8500 block of New Falls Road at about 10 a.m. Friday morning. Moments later, officials began establishing a crime scene.

LevittownNow.com was able to confirm through sources that a subject walked into the store armed with a firearm, and was shot by a clerk in the store. His condition is unknown, but there are conflicting reports that the suspect may have been gravely injured.

New Falls Road was expected to be closed between Drexelwood and Penn Valley Road until the afternoon.

Detectives were inside the store taking photos. Someone who appeared to be a store employee was seen being questioned by police. Another individual in a green minivan with New Jersey plates was detained by police when they responded to the shooting call.

There was no immediate word on whether or not the nearby Pennsbury High School was in lock down.
