Helping people is something that comes naturally to Jay Green, the owner of Jay’s Steak and Hoagie Joint at 313 West Lincoln Highway in Penndel.

Green has owned the store since 2005, when it was still the Steak and Hoagie Factory. Since the very beginning and since he broke away from the franchise label in recent years, giving back to the community has been high on Green’s list of priorities.

“I live my life trying to fund things I believe in,” he said.

There is evidence in Green’s creed in every way he conducts business. Whether donating $.25 from each sale involving a sandwich made on one of his famous pretzel rolls, to having a monthly “Pay it forward” winner – it isn’t hard to see that Green genuinely believes in helping people.

The true start for Green’s giving back started when he broke free from the Steak and Hoagie Factory franchise in 2012 and was looking for ideas to separate his sandwich shop from the other local shops.

Very recently, Green has added a donation jar to his counter where people who want to contribute to his causes can do so. Green also sells t-shirts promoting the shop, where half of the $20 goes to feeding the hungry.

“I work hard, but I believe in helping people who need it,” Green said. “If I can be positive in someone’s life, it’s worth it.”

Green does make positive impacts for people. His pretzel roll sales, as well as flat donations to the jar, and even his pay it forward program goes a long way to helping people in need.

Green’s major goal is a self-sustaining, business where all the profits go towards helping the community.

“There’s no sense of community, and that’s my dream, to bring back the sense of community,” Green explained after detailing his various charitable programs.

Green also offers a diverse menu, offering more than 40 gluten free menu items.

“It’s about helping people, not taking advantage.”
