Coroner IDs Bristol Motorcyclist Killed In Crash

Lehigh County authorities have identified the man killed in a crash on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Lehigh County Coroner Daniel Buglio confirmed on Monday that John Joseph Sweeney, 50, of Bristol, was the motorcyclist who was killed.

Sweeney was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred around 9:09 a.m. Sunday on the Northeast Extension in Washington Township, Lehigh County, authorities said.

According to Pennsylvania State Police Troop T Pocono Station, a 24-year-old woman from Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was driving a 2019 Honda HRV southbound in the northbound lanes, when the SUV collided with two motorcycles that were part of a group of six.

Sweeney was operating a 2016 Harley Davidson at the time of the impact, troopers said.

The wreck also resulted in injuries to a 24-year-old Bristol man, who was treated at the scene by Northern Valley Emergency Medical Services and then transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest, troopers said.

The driver of the Honda HRV sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Northbound traffic on the highway was detoured at the Lehigh Valley exit, and access to the northbound lanes from State Route 22 closed. Southbound lanes remained open on Sunday, state police said.

The Pennsylvania State Police Troop T Pocono Station, along with the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, is continuing to investigate the fatal collision.
