The project to replace a crumbling culvert in the Fairless Hills section of Falls Township is moving forward.

The Falls Township Board of Supervisors recently approved a $1,160,092.35 change order for the South Olds Boulevard road improvement program project to replace the failing culvert.
Township Engineer Joseph Jones said that additional work was required to reopen the roadway without weight restrictions.
Jones said he was “confident that that entire amount won’t be used.”

The section of South Olds Boulevard stretching from Trenton Road to the culvert has been closed since July, with the shutdown expected to extend into the fall.
Opting for a change order instead of the typical bidding process allowed the township to avoid further delays on the project, which is part of the township’s summer road improvement program.

“It’s a time sensitive thing,” Jones said. “We don’t want the road shut down for the seven months it would take to get through the bid process.”
In addition to replacing the crumbling culvert system, crews will restore the damaged roadway.
Township officials said earlier this year they had been developing plans to replace the structure since 2018.

Built in 1954, the culvert carries traffic over Queen Anne Creek, according to state data.
