Jesse W. Soby American Legion Post #148 officials stated that the cancellation was made out of respect for the safety of the community and the parade participants.

“Though the parade will not march this year, the meaning of Memorial Day remains as strong as ever,” the post said in a statement. “Today, we honor the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives defending this nation and the freedoms we hold dear. Their sacrifice is the foundation of the liberty we enjoy every day, and their courage will never be forgotten.”

While the procession is cancelled, the scheduled Memorial Day ceremony will still take place at 9 a.m. The event has been moved to the AME Church at the intersection of Pine Street and Flowers Avenue.

In its statement, the American Legion Post expressed gratitude to local residents for their continued patriotism and support as the community stands united to remember fallen heroes.

“As flags wave across our town and families gather together, let us remember those who paid the ultimate price for America,” the statement read. “May we pause in gratitude, reflect on their service, and keep their memory alive in our hearts. God Bless our Gold Star families, our veterans, and the United States of America.”

Elsewhere, the Croydon Memorial Day Parade remains scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. That event is organized by the Joseph A. Schumacher Veterans Association.
