A $3.66 million investment into the township’s roads is coming this summer after a vote by the Falls Township Board of Supervisors on Monday.

The supervisors approved the township’s annual road program and awarded the contract to James D. Morrissey Inc.

The work involves the full-depth reconstruction of more than half of Willow Drive, which involves rebuilding the road from the base up.

Additionally, the contractor will carry out mill and overlay work on North and South Olds and Cabot boulevards. Lynn Avenue, First and Second streets, and Mill Creek Road from Route 13 to the end will be milled and repaved.

The contract came in over the township’s projected budget.

Township Engineer Joe Jones told the supervisors that despite the cost, the quote from the lowest responsible bidder was fair given the condition of the roads.

Supervisor Erin Mullen asked why the Mill Creek Road section was listed as an “alternate” bid item rather than being included in the primary contract from the start.

Jones explained that the move was designed to protect the township against fluctuating material costs.

“We put in it as an alternate and were hoping that the numbers would be right and we could,” Jones said, adding that the stretch of road was “definitely needing the work.”

Township Manager John Shephard confirmed that the municipality has the necessary funds to move forward with the scope of work despite the higher-than-expected cost.

“We certainly have money in the fund to pay for this additional work,” Shephard said.
