Falls Township is rolling out a new inspection process for food trucks operating within its borders with a focus on safety requirements outlined in the International Fire Code.

The Falls Township Board of Supervisors approved the change last month.

Fire Marshal Rich Dippolito said inspections will ensure food trucks comply with specific requirements.

Key areas of focus for the inspections include verifying that food trucks have working fire extinguishers, clean hood systems, and functioning suppression systems. Inspectors will also check that generators are properly positioned to prevent burns and that trucks maintain safe distances from each other.

“They’re becoming so popular that we thought it was in our best interest to inspect these trucks that are coming into town for safety reasons,” Dippolito said. “It’s not a money grab, it’s just something we’re trying to do to keep everybody safe.”

Dippolito emphasized that the new process is not meant to discourage food truck operators but to ensure public safety.

“There are certain requirements that are now in the International Fire code that specifies how close they can be, what they should have,” he explained.

The township’s decision to start the inspections follow inspections already in place in many other municipalities.

Dippolito noted that food truck operators have generally been receptive to the new process.

“I think they expected it because there were other municipalities that had done it prior to us,” he said.
