As the cold December winds sweep across Bucks County, a warm, enduring flame known as the “Peace Light” glows inside Scottsville United Methodist Church each Christmas season.

Originating from the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Christians believe Jesus Christ was born, the flame has traveled thousands of miles to reach the church in Lower Southampton Township. The journey of the Peace Light begins each year in the Middle East where it is carried to Austria and then spread to churches across the globe, including throughout the U.S.
Rev. Don Keller of Scottsville United Methodist has overseen the arrival of the Peace Light at his church for many years.
“Symbolically, it’s a reminder of the peace of Christ and how that spreads across the nation and around the world,” Keller said. “Especially given what’s going on in the Middle East right now, it’s an important symbol for us and a reminder that we need to keep working to share that peace.”

The flame is kept alive in a fireproof container during its Austrian Airlines flight from Europe to New York City. From there, volunteers distribute the flame to various congregations across the country.
Keller explained that he personally ensures the flame remains lit by carrying two candles with him at all times, even to appointments and meetings.

“They fit nicely in the cup holder of my car,” he said. “I travel with two so that if one flushes out due to a sharp turn or sudden stop, at least one remains lit.”
To keep the flame alive for extended periods, the church on Brownsville Road uses special eight-day candles.
“This past year was the first year that we had actually kept it burning for a whole year,” Keller stated.

The pastor said there is a special place in the sanctuary where the Peace Light is displayed with a description of its historical and spiritual significance.
The Peace Light’s presence in Bucks County not only brings the community together but also connects them to a tradition maintained for over 1,500 years, Keller said.
