Commuters faced disruptions Sunday and Monday as downed Amtrak overhead power lines and switch issues impacted service, including SEPTA’s Trenton Regional Rail Line.

The problems come amid the major holiday travel season.

On Sunday, issues with the overhead lines prompted SEPTA to suspend its Trenton Regional Rail Line service, but operations resumed by nighttime.

Delays persisted into Monday morning due to ongoing Amtrak signal power issues, according to SEPTA.

Andrew Busch, a SEPTA spokesperson, said Monday morning that the Trenton Line is operated with “extensive delays.”

Amtrak, which shares tracks with the Trenton Line through the Levittown area, reported that signal power complications were causing “delays and rail congestion” along the busy corridor.

“This is an ongoing situation; crews are actively working on resolving this issue. Please note that plans are fluid and may change, and we will notify customers affected as soon as possible. Unfortunately, there is no estimate for the resume of standard operating service,” an Amtrak statement said.

The timing of these rail problems could not be less opportune, occurring one of the busiest travel periods of the year and as the region grapples with freezing temperatures.

The disruptions come as SEPTA’s Regional Rail has seen an upswing in ridership, with November figures showing a 12 percent increase over the previous year.

Travelers are advised to check for updates and plan for potential delays as crews work to restore normal service.
