Bristol Borough Council has given the green light to fund the Maple Beach Trail and parking improvements project.

Earlier this week, the council approved a $286,866 bid from J and B Construction to do the work.
A $250,000 grant the borough received covers most of the project’s cost, officials said.
The plan is to extend the trail from the new Maple Beach bridge to the waterfront parking lot and add 10 parking spaces on Maple Beach Road, officials said.

“It’s a $300,000-plus program that’s costing us under $100,000. It wouldn’t make sense to turn this money down,” Council President Ralph DiGuiseppe said.
The trail extension looks to improve connectivity in the borough and link up with the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor and canal trail and East Coast Greenway.

The extra parking spaces will serve both trail users and festival-goers.
Amanda Fuller, who works for the borough’s engineering firm explains the dual purpose:
“It’s for trail users who want to start at that location. They can access the D&L trail or the East Coast Greenway. It also helps with festival parking,” said Amanda

Serock points out that the waterfront parking lot often gets packed during events.
“This provides some overflow parking when needed,” she added.

The Maple Beach area, which sits in Bristol Borough and Bristol Township sits along the Delaware River. The space is largely open space and woods.
In recent years, the borough built a new, modern bridge to connect the borough to its section of Maple Beach.
