The crash occurred around 6:25 p.m. in Bristol Township when a 2002 Honda Accord driven by the woman collided with and became lodged underneath a 2022 Volvo tractor-trailer.
The truck, operated by a 30-year-old man from Philadelphia, was ahead on the highway when the Honda, trailing closely, struck it from behind, state police said.
According to the troopers’ news release, the truck dragged the Honda approximately 300 feet before managing to stop on the shoulder with the car still wedged underneath, state police said.

The crash inflicted serious damage to the front end of the Honda. It needed to be removed from the scene by a tow truck.
The Volvo tractor-trailer sustained damage to its Mansfield bar but was drivable post-crash, state police said.

The Bucks County Rescue Squad transported the woman to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital due to chest and back injuries.
The driver of the truck was unharmed.
Troopers announced on Monday the woman will be cited for following too closely.
The Mansfield bar is a safety feature on trailers designed to prevent under-riding in rear-end collisions. Its implementation followed the tragic death of actress Jayne Mansfield in 1967. She died when her car slammed into and became wedged under a trailer.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advocated for the Mansfield bar, which has been reported to have significantly reduced fatalities from such crashes.
Before its widespread adoption, an estimated 200 to 300 fatalities occurred annually due to vehicles crashing into the backs of trailers, according to MotorTrend.
