The automated red light enforcement systems have been installed at the intersections of Street Road and Knights Road, covering all directions, and at Route 1 and Old Lincoln Highway, affecting northbound and southbound traffic, according to a news release from Bensalem Township officials.
Police said the systems’ installation follows a five-year review of crash data showing a high incidence of collisions at these locations.
The decision came after a mention in Time Magazine, which, after analyzing data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, identified the intersection of Knights Road and Street Road in Bensalem Township as “the most dangerous intersection in America.”

The initiative was approved by Bensalem Township Council and supported by Mayor Joseph DiGirolamo. The council ratified an ordinance in 2023 that set the stage for this technological intervention.
Despite increased patrols in these areas, local authorities believe the automated system and police enforcement will substantially reduce the number of accidents.

Starting April 1, a 60-day warning period will be in effect. During this time, vehicle owners caught running a red light at these intersections will receive a warning notice.
Subsequent violations after this grace period will incur a $100 civil penalty, but the violations fines will not impact driving records, insurance rates, or CDL statuses.
All potential violations are reviewed by officers to confirm their validity before issuing notices, police said.

Bensalem Township officials said the revenue from the penalties will not benefit the township directly. Instead, it will cover the costs associated with the program, including equipment and personnel.
Residents and visitors caught by these cameras can view the evidence online and have the option to contest the violation through an in-person hearing at the Bensalem Township Municipal Building.
