Why Does Tullytown Have A Green Fire Truck?

Many area fire companies use a shade of red for their trucks, but the Tullytown Fire Company has introduced a green fire truck into its fleet.

Why?

The green truck comes at a time when the fire company is in a transitional phase.

Its red Engine 33 up for sale and a new Pierce pumper truck is still about a year away from completion and delivery.

To ensure the community remains well-protected in the interim, the fire company sought a reserve engine and found a solution in a 1992 Sutphen pumper truck from Scottdale Volunteer Fire Department in Westmoreland County.

Members of the Tullytown Fire Company recently embarked on a four-and-a-half-hour journey to Scottdale to inspect this older truck.

After testing, it was determined that the truck would indeed meet their needs, the fire company posted on social media.

“The reserve engine made it to the station, and over the next few weeks, the members will be trained on it and the truck will be equipped to serve the borough,” stated the fire company.

“If you see a green firetruck in town, this is why,” the fire company added.

The Bristol Fire Company and Falls Township Fire Company both have bright yellow fire trucks, but most local stations paint their trucks red.

According to the American Psychological Association, the traditional red may not be the most effective color for emergency vehicles. Certain colors are easier for the human eye to detect at night due to the way color-transmitting cones in our eyes function in low light.

Fire Rescue 1, a fire-focused news organization, explained that the early 20th-century shift to red fire trucks was primarily to distinguish them from the predominantly black cars of the era.

The Tullytown Fire Company has an approximately 100-year history of service to the borough.
