The cause of Gray’s off-duty death was not released, but an official said it happened last week.
Gray, a Philadelphia native, was a five-year veteran of the state police. He was most recently stationed at the Troop K barracks in Philadelphia.
He is remembered by his colleagues and the Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge No. 37 as a “leader on his midnight squad” known for his “calm and level-headed approach to any situation.”

Before joining the state police, Gray had a career in the U.S. Army Special Forces, where he served as a Green Beret. His service included deployments in Iraq and the Philippines, ending in 2015.
Gray, who held a degree in criminal justice from Pennsylvania State University, was remembered by loved ones as a man devoted to his family, enjoying activities like golfing, basketball, working out, and spending quality time with his wife, daughter, and dog, according to an obituary and social media posts.
He is survived by his wife, Emily Chau, his daughter, Charlotte, and other family members.
