A man will be charged after a Morrisville Borough police officer was struck from behind while assisting Falls Township police with a disabled vehicle on Route One southbound, according to authorities.

The crash took place at 8:40 p.m. on Monday in the area of Route 32 near the Falls Township and Morrisville Borough border.
Cpl. William Smith, of the Morrisville Borough Police Department, was tending to the disabled vehicle when he was hit by a car driven by Juan Martinez, 41, of Trenton, New Jersey.
Although impairment did not play a role in the accident, several other factors did cause the crash, which send the officer to the hospital, police said.

A check by investigators revealed that Martinez had an active arrest warrant from the Bucks County Sheriff’s Office. He was taken into custody, police said.

Following the collision, Smith was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton for medical evaluation and treatment. He was later released as he wasn’t admitted, police said.

Morrisville Borough officials said on Tuesday that Smith was recovering.
Falls Township police will cite Martinez for multiple violations, including driving under suspension DUI related, drivers required to be licensed, duty of driver in an emergency response area, careless driving, driving vehicle at safe speed, unregistered vehicle, and financial responsibility.
According to police department, Smith is a nearly 20-year veteran of law enforcement and a 25-year firefighter.

Smith has served as a crash reconstructionist for the department.
