Jason Steere’s actions resulted in saving the lives of four people from the blaze.
Just past noon, Steere was driving along Durham Road in Penndel Borough when he spotted the two-story building in the 100 block of Durham Road engulfed in flames.
“Mr. Steere quickly jumped into action, exited his vehicle, and began yelling to the occupants of the building, alerting them that the building was on fire. Mr. Steere then proceeded to assist the residents with their escape from the building by helping them as they leapt from the deck area to the ground below, borough officials said.

“The brave actions and selflessness that Mr. Steere showed that day ultimately saved the lives of four people,” officials added.
Steere was presented with citations and commendations from State Sen. Frank Farry, a fire official who was on scene today; State Rep. Joe Hogan; Chief of Police Sean Perry; Fire Marshal Jim Bampfield; and Mayor Tom Sodano.

The fire marshal said the blaze was caused accidentally by “careless disposal of smoking materials that ignited combustible materials under the steps on the south side of the structure.”
While no residents were serious hurt, a pet cat died in the fire.
A firefighter from the Third District Fire Company suffered heat exhaustion and was taken to St. Mary Medical Center. They were treated and released.

“I remind everyone to be sure you have working smoke detectors and be sure to frequently check to be sure they are operational. If you are in need of a smoke detector please contact your local fire department or municipal fire marshal,” the fire marshal said in the wake of the blaze.
