The Middletown Township Police Department was left heartbroken as they bid a tearful farewell to valiant four-legged partner, K-9 Nyxx, who served alongside Officer Kevin Eckenrode for many years.

The news of Nyxx’s death was shared by the department Thursday. The cause of death was not announced.
Nyxx had a remarkable career that saw him involved in more than 400 deployments, resulting in more than 100 surrenders, 6 apprehensions, and 15 successful tracks, police said.
Police said Nyxx’s two most notable calls were locating a missing autistic child and apprehending a home invasion suspect.

The police dog was instrumental in assisting the Middletown Police Department and other agencies in the region with more than 60 explosive sweeps and article searches.

Nyxx was well known in the community and took part in roughly 100 demonstrations and events across the county.

“Losing any animal is devastating. But, only those in the K-9 handler community will intimately understand the grief that is felt when they lose their partner. They spend more hours with their K-9 partner than they do their own human family. They put their lives and trust into their K9 which forms a unique and beautiful bond,” the police department wrote in a Facebook post.
The department asked for the community’s thoughts and prayers for the Eckenrode family.
