Joseph M. Nelson Sr., 74, was born and raised in Bristol Borough and left a lasting impact on both the fire company and the safety equipment industry, according to an obituary and statements on his passing.
Bristol Borough Mayor Ralph DiGuiseppe III remembered Nelson at the public council meeting this week.
“He was what defined Bristol Borough. He loved the community, He loved the events, and he loved his family,” the mayor said.

Nelson graduated from Bristol High School in 1968 and owned Triangle Fire and Safety Equipment and Super Can Industries, both in Bristol Township.
Utilizing his talents, Nelson created several important products, according to remembrances.

His development of the Dual Purpose Air Cart has led to a product that continues to be utilized by fire departments worldwide, according to the Bristol Consolidated Fire Company.
Nelson’s obituary said he “patenting several life saving devices.”
For three decades, Nelson, who was a husband, father, and grandfather, served as a volunteer firefighter at Bristol Station 53, with 19 years spent as chief.

While in the fire service, he founded Pennsylvania’s first-ever dive rescue team.
His services will be held next week.
