Trumanโs Environmental Club has been working with a non-profit organization, Tree-Plenish, to organize a tree planting event on Earth Day. Tree-Plenish is dedicated to empowering students to create a more sustainable future through community tree-planting.
The Truman Environmental Club decided to undertake this project in an effort to offset the emission of greenhouse gases generated by the high school. Free trees will be available on a first come, first serve basis in the front of the school. Trained club members will demonstrate how to plant the trees as well.
Along with the trees from Tree-Plenish, Pinelands Nursery in Columbus, NJ is donating an additional 400 trees of three native varieties: Red Maple, Sweetgum and Pin Oak. Pinelands Nursery is one of the largest, wholesale native plant growers on the east coast. The sales manager, Fran Chismar, is an alumnus of Truman High School, class of 88, and offered the donation after G.O.A.L. (The Greenbelt Overhaul Alliance of Levittown) reached out to them. The Truman Environmental Club and GOAL, Levittownโs local grassroots environmental organization, have been partnering on projects for years and will be helping with the tree planting event on Earth Day.

If 400 saplings are planted in Bristol Township, it would offset the amount of carbon the school emitted from electricity and gas last year. Once the trees mature, they can help reduce climate change. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, a mature tree can absorb 48 pounds of CO2 a year.
Additionally, for residents who live within ten minutes of the school, the club will offer to plant the tree at a $20 donation, and a $10 donation for each additional tree. In the past, these donations have been used to install 20 solar panels on the high schoolโs roof, plant trees on school grounds and help pay for members to go on a club field trip to the Florida Keys.
โThank you to the community for helping our club raise enough money for 400 trees,โ said Kelsey Dietrick, along with Lars McGee, who are the environmental club advisors. โWe look forward to making our community more sustainable and hope to see you at our Tree-Plenish event.โ
