Local firefighters responded to an eight-alarm fire at a New Jersey church Monday evening.

The Bristol Consolidated, Croydon, and Edgely, fire companies were among the numerous departments from both sides of the river who responded to the Fountain of Life Center fire in Florence Township, New Jersey. The church sits just under 3 miles from Bristol Township.
The plume of smoke during the blaze could be seen from the Levittown area.
The massive church’s roof collapsed as a result of a serious fire. Although there were more than 100 firefighters battling the flames, reports indicated that the church was completely destroyed.

“Firefighters did a tremendous job of trying to stop the fire interiorly, it was just the size of the building the amount of fire that was here we had to switch our operation to a defensive operation,” Robert Tharp, the administrator of the Florence Township Fire District, told CBS Philadelphia News.

“It’s a devastating loss,” Russell Hodgins, a senior pastor at the Fountain of Life Center, said to 6abc.
The fire took place in a rural area and firefighters had to bring in additional water to fight the flames.
Due to the nearby border, Lower Bucks County fire crews will respond to assist New Jersey fire companies when needed. On occasion, New Jersey fire crews cross the river to help Bucks County towns.
