Falls Township’s fire marshal and fire police officers showed off new battery-operated flares designed to keep emergency responders safe.

At the Falls Township Board of Supervisors Monday evening meeting, Fire Marshal Rich Dippolito explained the system that the township purchased from maker Pi-Lit.
According to Dippolito, the battery-operated flares have a longer lifespan than a burning flare that lasts about 20 minutes, can be synchronized, and can be programmed to perform different patterns.
“Approaching drivers see a sequentially-lit string of flares much like a runway landing strip that guides traffic around the incident or work zone,” said the website of the battery-operated flare manufacture. “They are easy to deploy and provide advanced traffic guidance and safety.”

Dippolito said the municipality currently has about a dozen battery-operated flares. Fire police are now testing them out, and they haven’t yet use them to warn traffic during emergency situations yet.
“On behalf of the volunteer fire companies, I’d like to thank the township for purchasing these and handing them out to the volunteers. Anything to make it safer,” Dippolito said.

Supervisors Vice Chairperson Jeff Boraski told the volunteers to if they have any problems with the system, let the fire marshal’s office know so it can be taken care of.
Fire police assist the township’s fire companies and police with traffic control around emergency scenes.
