Two people were startled awake by their family dog. Their pooch, according to a fire official, was alerting them that their home was ablaze.

The fire happened around 4:40 a.m. in the 1500 block of Morris Street in Bristol Township.

Crews arrived to find a small fire in a bathroom at the house, Newportville Fire Company Chief John Doster said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and kept it from spreading beyond the bathroom, Doster said.

The two residents escaped injury, Doster said.

“The dog wakes up the residents,” the fire chief said. “The dog was whining and barking a bit and made them aware of the fire.”

Bristol Township Fire Marshal Kevin Dippolito said the cause of the blaze has been ruled accidental.

The Newportville Fire Company was assisted at the scene by the Croydon, Goodwill Hose, Edgely, and Third District fire companies.
