Recycling day in Bristol Borough will be changing in 2023.

Bristol Borough Council President Ralph DiGuiseppe announced Monday evening that recycling day is being changed from Friday to Tuesday starting the first week of the new year.

DiGuiseppe said the change in days will benefit residents because recyclables collected from weekend events and parties won’t have to wait until the next Friday to be picked up.

“When this was presented to us, we thought it would be a lot better for us because in summer people have picnics on the weekend and they have to keep the stuff until the following week,” he said.

The council president said trash and recycling hauler J.P. Mascaro & Sons will be making a mailer to alert residents.

J.P. Mascaro & Sons collects the following items for recycling, according to the borough:

• Aluminum cans, like beer & soda, aluminum foil and foil plates, metal lids, metal food cans (tin/steel)
• Glass bottles & jars (any color, food & drink online)
• Plastic containers numbered one through seven
• Paper and cardboard should be separate from other items to be recycled. Large boxes should be cut into 2 by 2-inch sections and bundled

J.P. Mascaro & Sons does not collect the below items for recycling:

• Glass ovenware, Pyrex, Vision Ware, window glass, mirrors, and light bulbs
• Any plastics without number one through seven labeling, plastic bags, Styrofoam packaging, bubble wrap, tissue, or paper towels
• Milk or juice wax paper cartons, metallic, or coated paper
• Waxed boxes, books, or toys

Bristol Borough trash pickup remains scheduled for Tuesdays and Fridays.

Bristol Borough and J.P. Mascaro & Sons are under agreement through the end of 2023 as part of a 2020 contract extension that paid the Montgomery County company upfront but lock in a rate of $115 per property for years 2021, 2022, and 2023.

In 2020 and 2021, J.P. Mascaro & Sons, like many waste haulers, faced delays due to staffing shortages and other problems caused by the pandemic.

DiGuiseppe said this week that trash contract costs are up on the region and he is proud the borough extended their contract in 2020. He urged his fellow council members to start looking for a new trash hauler starting next spring.
