Levittown-Area Police Assisted In Gun Case That Led To Jail Time

Investigators from the Bristol Township and Middletown Township police departments assisted in a large firearms investigation that led to the defendant being sentenced to state prison.

Last week at the Justice Center in Doylestown Borough, Scott Allen McCaughey, 65, of Plumstead Township, was sentenced to five to 10 years in state prison by Court of Common Pleas Judge Charissa Liller.

In September, the Central Bucks County man pleaded guilty to two counts of prohibited possession of a firearm for the guns found at his home and two additional counts of prohibited possession of a firearm for two mostly-completed assault-style rifle frames/receivers, according to the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office.

A search of McCaughey’s residence in the 4900 block of Durham Road in Plumstead Township on April 28 uncovered guns that he was not permitted to own due to his criminal history, which includes a 1980 felony conviction for robbery. McCaughey was then arrested, authorities said.

During the multi-agency search of McCaughey’s residence, investigators found a semiautomatic M4-style “ghost gun” rifle and a bolt-action rifle, authorities said.

In speaking with investigators, McCaughey said he possessed the firearms he wasn’t legally able to have based on his prior convictions, authorities said.

According to police, a check of his residence also turned up milling machinery McCaughey used to make weapons, parts to make further weapons, ammo, and magazines.

This probe was led by Detective William Mooney of the Plumstead Township Police Department and Officer Stephen Pekach of the Bedminster Township Police Department. In addition to the assistance from the Bristol Township and Middletown Township cops, the Bucks County Detectives, Quakertown Borough Police Department, Solebury Township Police Department, Doylestown Township Police Department, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. The Central Bucks Special Response Team assisted.

“The dedicated and tireless work done by investigators in this case is another example of the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office’s commitment to combating gun violence by punishing those who illegally possess guns,” the prosecutor’s office said.
