Bill Kelly will start at the CBS owned-and-operated station in Philadelphia on January 9.

He is coming to the station after serving as chief meteorologist for the ABC affiliate in Washington D.C., according to CBS 3 Vice President and News Director Kathleen Gerrow.

Kelly will lead the weather reports on the CBS 3’s 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. newscasts. He will helm the weather desk for the 10 p.m. newscast on CW Philly and throughout the evening on the CBS News Philadelphia streaming channel.

The Philadelphia region isn’t new to Kelly. The station said Kelly’s parents are Pennsbury High School graduates and he spent the summers of his childhood with his grandparents in Fairless Hills and Levittown.

“Family and roots are so important to me,” Kelly said. “The opportunity to raise my three amazing daughters in the same place their grandparents were born and raised is beyond a blessing. I can’t wait to share with them all of the incredible things about the Philadelphia area that I love!”

Veteran CBS 3 meteorologist Kate Bilo, who has held the chief job for several years, will move to daytime newscasts and handle a growing number of forecasts on the streaming channel.

Prior to working in Washington D.C., Kelly served as chief meteorologist for stations in Phoenix; Columbus, Ohio; and Spokane, Washington. He also worked with Sinclair Broadcast Group to develop company-wide weather protocols and content. Additionally, Kelly has been a speaker at the National Weather Association’s annual meetings.

Kelly earned bachelor’s degree in broadcast news communications from California State University and broadcast meteorology certification from Mississippi State University. The forecaster holds the National Weather Association Weathercaster Seal of Approval.

“We look forward to welcoming him to our family and having him join Kate, our weekday morning meteorologist Llarisa Abreu, and weekend meteorologists Tammie Souza and Andrew Kozak on our NextWeather team,” Gerrow said of Kelly’s hiring.

Kelly joins other high-profile TV journalists from Lower Bucks County, including CBS News’ Robert Costa, CBS 3 reporter Alicia Roberts, NBC Richmond, Virginia reporter Macy Moors, former 6abc sportscaster Jeff Skversky, 6abc’s Trish Hartman, former CBS 3 anchor Susan Barnett, former 6abc reporter-turned-real estate agent Jeff Chirico, and NBC News anchor Hallie Jackson.
