Teachers’ Union Distributes Books To Students Ahead Of New Year

Neshaminy School District students gearing up for the start of the new school year received new books and enjoyed a movie Tuesday.

The Neshaminy Federation of Teachers and the American Federation of Teachers hosted a “Reading Opens the World” event at the United Artist Oxford Valley theater in Middletown Township. To hand out, they brought 1,000 new books with them.

The students were able to pick educational books, including biographies of famous Americans and books on civics and the arts, at tables outside the movie theater. After picking out books, students filled four theaters and watched a screening, enjoyed with complimentary popcorn, of “DC League of Super-Pets.”

Student Sophia Browne, of Levittown, picked out a book at no cost on creating cartoons and drawing.

“I have to read for 15 minutes every day, so this book is good because I like drawing,” she said.

Tara Huber, a Neshaminy High School teacher and president of the Neshaminy Federation of Teachers, said the event was a great way to prepare for a return to the classroom.

“It’s exciting to be able to see parents and our students before the school year starts and outside of the school building,” she said.

She said the books will be a benefit for the students.

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten championed the literacy initiative and said the union was happy to provide books for local students.

“What a better way to promote a love of reading than giving out age-appropriate books,” she said. “We’re here to help out kids.”

Huber noted that there were also resources to help teachers in preparing for the new school year.

Students were able to meet the Middletown Township police officers who are assigned to school buildings.

Police collected supplies to help students who may need them for the upcoming school year.
