A grassroots group opposed to the sale of the Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority’s wastewater system to a for-profit company will hold a virtual town hall Thursday.

The online event will take place at 7 p.m. and is hosted by Neighbors Opposing Privatization Efforts (NOPE), a group that grew out of public utility privatization efforts in Montgomery County.
The presentation will feature Anthony Bellitto, executive director of the North Penn Water Authority and past president of the Pennsylvania Municipal Authorities Association. He will discuss the proposed sale.
Aqua Pennsylvania has purposed purchasing the Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority’s sewer system for $1.1 billion. The public authority would keep its smaller water system, while letting the company buy its sewer system.

The county chartered the authority in 1962 and could receive more than $1 billion in profit if the sale that will raise customer rates goes through.
The deal would be the largest one of its kind in Pennsylvania and possibly the nation.

Aqua officials have framed the deal as a good move for the authority and ratepayers, but numerous municipal and public utility advocates have called the sale a bad move for ratepayers.
At recent public meetings on the proposal, nearly all comments were negative.
The Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority Board of Directors have said they’re soliciting feedback from the public before making a decision.
