Around 5:49 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters were dispatched to the 600 block of Clymer Street for a call that a backyard grill had exploded.

Tony Riccio, a former Bristol Borough fire official and current Bristol Township volunteer firefighter, was nearby and arrived quickly on the scene.

The homeowner was already using a garden hose to spray the flames, and Riccio and another firefighter took over.

Crews arrived to find the grill ablaze with fire extending to the inside of the one-story dwelling, Bristol Borough Fire Chief Herb Slack said.

As part of the firefighting effort, crews ripped open the walls to check to see if flames had extended throughout the house, Slack said.

The fire caused smoke damage inside the residence.
