The upgrade to Pennsbury High School’s Falcon Field sports complex is beginning.
Starting this week, the district’s work to reconstruct the two bleachers and prepare to convert the field from grass to artificial turf has started. The district waited until after last week’s graduation to start the projects that have been in the works for several years.

The project to demolish the existing bleachers and construct new ones will cost $2.1 million and be completed in fall, district officials said.
“The district purchased the bleachers and materials separately, ahead of time, because there were concerns about price increases,” said Jennifer Neill, the district spokesperson.
The cost to convert the field isn’t yet known, as the a request for bids isn’t expected to go out until winter, Neill said.

The plan to convert the field to turf isn’t expected to start until after the winter thaw in 2023 and be completed until the end of summer 2023.
The project comes after a structural review of the stadium was completed in summer 2019 at the request of the district administration and school board.

Remington and Vernick Engineers completed the review and said the bleachers were generally structurally sound, but needed work. The report noted the bleachers were rusting.
“In order to protect the structure for long-term use, the steel is recommended to be properly cleaned, prepared and painted to prevent further rusting and deterioration,” according to the engineering report.
The press box overlooking the stadium was suffered from decay and will be rebuilt.
