In a primary election day statement, his campaign said he took a “precautionary” COVID-19 test before campaign stops Monday evening and tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
“Attorney General Shapiro is currently experiencing mild symptoms, and he plans to continue his work of serving the people of Pennsylvania as he isolates at home,” he campaign said in a statement.
Shapiro, a Montgomery County resident, is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.

“Attorney General Shapiro will be back on the campaign trail next week and will kick off the general election campaign in Johnstown,” he campaign said.
Austin Davis, a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor and Shapiro’s running mate, wished the attorney general a “quick recovery and return to the trail.”

Shapiro has posted numerous photos in recent weeks at campaign stops where he is with large groups unmasked. Masking guidelines have been eased over the past year as COVID-19 vaccination rates have increased and new treatments have helped care for ill patients.
Earlier this year, Shapiro said vaccine mandates are not part of his platform, but he believes people should be vaccinated.
