A longtime and notable member of the Bristol Township community passed away earlier this month.

With his family by his side on April 4, Herb Schoell Sr. passed away at the age of 83.
On Thursday evening, Bristol Township Council recognized Schoell for his years of service and dedication to the township.
Schoell served as the chief of the Newportville Fire Company for 20 years and president for a decade. He was involved in other aspects of the fire service in the township and even served as township fire marshal in the 1970s.

“He was best known as the go-to guy,” said Council Member Maryann Wagner.
Council Member Joe Glasson said Schoell was a mentor to him and a friend.

“Herbie meant a lot to us,” Glasson said.
Schoell was a U.S. Navy veteran and served on the USS Saufley.
The longtime township resident and official was a founding member of the Pennsylvania State Arson Association.

Schoell was born in Philadelphia and moved to the township with his family when he was young.
“The doors to his house were always open if you needed to laugh, cry or if you just needed a shoulder to lean on,” Schoell’s family wrote in his obituary.

Schoell is survived by his wife of 59 years, two sons, one daughter, their spouses, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
