Fifth-grade students at Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School in the Pennsbury School District laced up their sneakers and hit the gridiron for a worthy cause.
On Friday, the students in Falls Township, led by their 5th-grade teachers, took part in the 12th annual Super Duper Bowl, benefiting the Bucks County Emergency Homeless Shelter in Levittown.
The Super Duper Bowl is a yearly flag football competition that takes place the Friday before the Super Bowl. It has become a time-honored tradition at the school.

โEach class creates their own team name and mascot using their homeroom teacherโs name. They also design custom team t-shirts which they will proudly wear during the big game. These students look forward to ending their last year at Eleanor Roosevelt by experiencing this exciting event,โ said Jason Miller, a fifth-grade teacher at Eleanor Roosevelt.
The rest of the student body contributes to the fun and the cause, making signs to cheer the 5th-grade teams. They also donate canned goods for the food drive, that are placed in the decorated collection box of their favorite team.

Despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the game will go on as scheduled following the districtโs health and safety plan to ensure all participants remain healthy and safe with the support of district administration.
โThanks to the support of Principal Lisa Follman and Superintendent Tom Smith we are able to continue what has become a rite of passage for our 5th graders while providing an opportunity for our school to help families in our community,โ said Miller.
