Ever heard of an illegal stop sign? They are apparently a problem and Middletown Township has had some up for decades.

In the Langhorne Gables neighborhood, the township had 17 stop signs scattered throughout the section that were not up to snuff.

While the stop signs were installed by the township over many, many years, they were never authorized through township ordinance, as is required.

As the township and police were in the neighborhood recently, they discovered the problem, and the Middletown Township Board of Supervisors voted last week to properly memorialize the existing signs via ordinance.

“In many cases, those signs have been up for decades,” Assistant Township Manager Nick Valla said.

The ordinance will give police proper authority to enforce them and update the township’s books.

Also at the meeting, the supervisors voted to convert the intersection of Parkview and Buttonwood avenues to a four-way stop.

The intersection currently has a one-way stop.

“This is naturally what a motorist would expect,” Valla said of the change.
