Local municipalities will be receiving annual grant funding through the Redevelopment Authority of the Bucks County’s program that uses revenue generated by Parx Casino in Bensalem Township.

The Redevelopment Authority of the Bucks County’s board voted to approve the grants during their meeting last Friday.

Municipalities contiguous to Bensalem Township – Bristol Borough, Bristol Township, Hulmeville Borough, Langhorne Borough, Langhorne Manor Borough, Lower Southampton Township, Middletown Township, and Penndel Borough – were able to apply funding for themselves or even on behalf of projects or organizations in other towns. The county was also able to apply for funding.

The program is designed to aid contiguous municipalities impacted the most by the casino. The projects funded largely focus on infrastructure improvements, municipal upgrades, human services, and emergency services.

This year’s grants total to $3.28 million. The total is a rebound from last year’s $2.78 million, which was caused by the pandemic-related closure of the casino.

“Today’s grant awards will support safe, vibrant and healthy communities with investments in infrastructure improvements and ensuring our police departments and first responders have the resources they need,” said Sean Schafer, chairman of the Redevelopment Authority of Bucks County.

“The authority is extremely proud the partnerships we’ve established with local municipalities to make the Municipal Grant Program a success. Most importantly, these grants will direct funding to their prioritized projects while reducing the onus on local taxpayers,” said Jeff Darwak, executive director of the Redevelopment Authority of Bucks County.

State Sen. Tommy Tomlinson, a Republican from Bensalem Township, spurred the creation the grant program in 2008.

“When I initially envisioned this program, my intention was to relieve the tax burden of local residents and provide our first responders with the critical equipment they need to keep us safe. After thirteen years, and over $50 million in projects, I am pleased to see the realization of that vision and to know this program will continue to benefit the communities and families in lower Bucks County for years to come,” Tomlinson said.

Since its inception, the program has granted $52 million for towns.
