Falls Township will fix a what the municipality’s engineer said is a “pretty significant sinkhole.”
The Falls Township Board of Supervisors voted earlier this week to replace a failing culvert on Rice Drive near Annamarie Drive in the Morrisville section of the township.

The existing culvert is made of corrugated metal pipe and washed out during recent heavy storms. The storms left behind the large sinkhole that needs to be fixed.
“We certainly don’t want to leave that condition any longer than we have to,” Township Engineer Joe Jones said.
“The board voted unanimously to approve a proposal from Jones Engineering Associates for engineering services related to the design of a concrete structure spanning the portion of Martins Creek that passes under Rice Drive at Annamarie Drive. As part of the proposal, the firm would obtain professional surveying services, topographic data needed for permits, in addition to preparing bid schedules, advertisements and attendance at pre-bid meetings, bid evaluations and responsible contractor reviews. The firm would also provide construction inspection and oversight, as well as construction administration,” the township said in a statement.

The project is expected to go out to bid in spring, with the goal to have work begin in June or July, Jones said.
Rice Drive will be closed and traffic will be detoured while the work occurs. The work is estimated to take three months, Jones said.

Supervisors Chairman Jeff Dence joked that road closures never take just three months.
In other business, the supervisors approved an intergovernmental agreement between Falls Township and Lower Makefield Township to let their 2021 road contractor to pave the entirety of Elbow Lane and Walnut Lane, which sit in both municipalities.
Lower Makefield Township, according to the agreement, will reimburse Falls Township for the cost of paving the portion of the road in their community.
