The McDonald’s along Route 13 in Bristol Borough is getting a major makeover.

As part of the fast food chain’s global effort to have its locations conform with one style, the plans for the McDonald’s on Commerce Circle were approved for the complete overhaul by Bristol Borough Council Monday evening.

McDonald’s was granted approval and received a partial waiver for sidewalks. The borough’s engineer will have to work the franchisee’s engineers to come up with a plan to add a sidewalk along the entranceway near the Commerce Circle intersection with Route 13.

The council waived the requirement for landscaping and a sidewalk along Route 13, which is owned by the shopping center and not the McDonald’s franchisee.

Councilperson Tony Devine said sidewalks would be helpful in the shopping center.

The construction manager for the project, which is set to begin in November, voiced some discontentment.

“There is a level of frustration as far as the sidewalks are concerned. All of the other sidewalks were done by PennDOT, but this particular site we’re being required to add sidewalk but none of that is on our property,” she said.

The construction manager was relieved when she was told the borough was only requiring the restaurant to install one sidewalk and not two.

Engineers for the McDonald’s refresh said the plan calls for getting rid of the iconic mansard roof and bringing the outside and inside of the structure in line with updated locations in the area. The plan will remove the location’s bay window, add a vestibule, create an office, increase spaces for people people with disabilities, and reduce the overall building size by 19-square-feet, but generally keep the existing footprint.

The overhaul of the aging McDonald’s location will include adding four parking spaces and updating landscaping, the engineers said.

“The building is definitely in need of repair,” he said. “It needs to be fixed.”
