A large new generator stationed at Bristol Borough High School will come in handy during power disruptions, especially if the building is needed as an emergency shelter.

Merle Winslow, the borough’s emergency management director, said the generator was transported recently from a soon-to-be-demolished facility at the Dow Chemical site in Bristol Borough and Bristol Township to the high school.

The generator was placed on a freshly-poured concrete base at the high school.

“It is more or less a power plant. It is big enough it will run the whole school,” Winslow said.

Dow Chemical had looked at selling the generator that was installed on an empty building, but Mayor Joe Saxton and Winslow were able to talk to the company to donate it to the town.

“We really lucked out,” Winslow said.

The generator is worth about $100,000 and was only lightly used by Dow Chemical.

Winslow explained that he conducted an assessment of emergency shelter locations in the borough a few years back and not all locations had a generator.

Snyder-Girotti Elementary School already has a generator and Winslow is working to get one for the senior center, which serves as a warming and cooling center at times.

Superintendent Dr. Rose Minniti thanked Winslow for his work on getting the generator.

School Board President David Chichilitti thanked all who worked on the project and said the related equipment from Dow Chemical likely totaled $200,000. He said a plaque of appreciation will be placed with the generator.
