Nearly five minutes of uninterrupted clapping is rare. It’s rare for a concert. It’s rare for a speech.
On Thursday evening, Yardley Borough police Chief Joe Kelly received about five minutes of clapping from medical staff and police officers at St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown Township.

The chief was hit by pellets from a shotgun blast following a county probation check in his town on Wednesday. He suffered an injury to his ear and to his left hand, which required surgery.
Officers from agencies in Bucks County and New Jersey, where Kelly worked before being hired by Yardley Borough in 2015, took part in the clap out as the chief was released from the hospital.
“The thing that makes this business different than another one is this,” he said, thanking those who came out.

The 24-year-old man who shot Kelly and at a county probation officer, who was not injured, is in custody and facing serious charges, including attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer.
Police escorted Kelly to his home after his stay in the hospital.
