Around 3:45 p.m., the man, Colin Petroziello, who is in his 20s, was taken in custody without incident.

He will be charged with attempted murder, according to District Attorney Matt Weintraub.

As of 4 p.m., residents were being allowed back in their homes.

The injured police chief will be going home from the hospital in the coming day, authorities said.

Two weapons were recovered from the scene.

Yardley Borough police Chief Joe Kelly suffered gunshot wounds to one hand and ear. The suspect fired a shotgun at the chief, Lower Makefield police Chief Kenneth Coluzzi said.

The incident started when a probation officer on a check requested assistance around 11 a.m. and Kelly responded. The suspect opened fire on the chief, Coluzzi said.

The probation officer was not hit by the shotgun blast, Coluzzi said.

The suspect’s mother was evacuated from the Yardley Commons unit and her son remained in a standoff with police as of 1:45 p.m.

Kelly was taken to St. Mary Medical Center for treatment.

Levittown-area police agencies responded to assist Yardley Borough officers late Wednesday morning.

The incident happened in the area of the Yardley Commons along South Main Street in Yardley Borough just past 11 a.m.

An officer, according to police sources, was shot and the suspect is believed to be holed up in an apartment as of 12:30 p.m. Early word was the officer was alert following the shooting and being treated.

Readers reported seeing police rushing from the Levittown area toward Yardley Borough.

The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office said their detectives were responding.

Newtown Township police posted online that residents at Yardley Commons should shelter in place.
