A regular feature looking back at what was being printed more than 100 years ago in the former Bristol Daily Courier. This week’s entry comes from the June 11, 1919 edition of the newspaper.
Stores Close For Half Day
This afternoon, the Mill Street business merchants began to close their stores at 12 o’clock noon for the balance of the day, during the summer months. Not all of the merchants are in the movement but the majority have joined what has been termed the Progressive Business Men of Bristol. The movement was started several weeks ago and was started with the idea of affording the merchants along with their employees some time for recreation. Most of those work longer hours than any other branch of industrial activity and are called upon to work Saturday afternoons and evenings as well.

With approximately 15 additional merchants added to the grocers who previously closed their places of business at noon on Wednesday, today resembled Sunday so far as a suspension of retail business activity is concerned. There was practically nothing doing about town. By next week, it is hoped that still more will join the movement. Several uptown places of business are also closed this afternoon.
In regard to the new movement of closing, the following statement was given out for publication:
Owing to the hard conditions of long working hours of the employees of stores in Bristol, the merchants have concluded in order to assist the progressive moment to close their stores Wednesday noon for the balance of the day, beginning today.
