Q. I donโt always look at my PECO bill since Iโm on auto-pay but I noticed this month there was a small notice tucked in with my billing statement. The notice says that PECO is requesting a rate increase so electric rates may be increasing if approved by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. Is there anything we can do to oppose this increase?

A. This is actually fairly common so you may just not have noticed these informational notices tucked in with your billing statement. The good news is that before a rate increase can take effect PECO has to request permission through the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. The PUC is the state agency that has the responsibility of investigating the proposed rate increase and makes a final determination as to what increase, if any, is just and reasonable. The PA PUC will hold public input hearings where consumers can register ahead of time to call into the meeting to listen in and participate by making a public comment. Bucks County Consumer Protection always encourages residents to be informed and advocate for their rights. These public input hearings are scheduled for Tuesday June 8, 2021 at 1PM and 6PM, as well as Wednesday June 9,2021 at 1PM and 6PM. If you would like to register to testify and make a public comment at the meeting you can contact the PA Office of Consumer Advocate at 1-800-684-6560 by 5PM on Friday June 4, 2021. If you do not register in advance, you will not be able to listen to or participate in the telephone public input hearings. The Office of Consumer Advocate represents consumer interests and encourages all consumers affected by this proposed rate increase to participate. For more information call The Office of Consumer Advocate at: 1-800-684-6560.
