Pennsylvania State Police said drivers should buckle up, and they will be checking.

Pennsylvania law requires any vehicle occupant younger than 18 to buckle up when riding in a vehicle, as well as drivers and front-seat passengers. Children under the age of two must be secured in a rear-facing car seat, and children under the age of four must be restrained in an approved child safety seat. Children must ride in a booster seat until their eighth birthday.

“Throughout this campaign, troopers will be specifically concentrating on motorists who operate a motor vehicle while unbuckled and do not have a proper child restraint system for children who are passengers within the vehicle,” troopers said.

โ€œโ€˜Click it or Ticket’ isn’t about citations, it’s about saving lives,โ€ said PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian. โ€œBuckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones in a crash.โ€

Troopers from multiple local counties will be taking part in a joint nighttime seatbelt enforcement detail on Thursday, May 27.

State police said most vehicle crash fatalities are of those who are unbelted. The seat belt usage rate in Pennsylvania is 88.9 percent.

“Motorists are reminded of Pennsylvaniaโ€™s โ€œMove Over Law,โ€ which requires motorists  approaching an emergency response area and are unable to safely merge into a lane further away from the response area to “pass the emergency response area at a speed of no more than 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit and reasonable for safely passing.” Fines for offending motorists range from $500.00 for the first offense to $2,000.00 for a third and subsequent offense,” troopers said.
