There will be nighttime lane closures this week as PennDOT’s Route 1 overhaul project moves forward.

PennDOT officials said there will be periodic northbound and southbound lane closures on Route 1 between Old Lincoln Highway and Pine Street (Route 413) in Bensalem and Middletown townships Monday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The work is for the ongoing reconstruction and widening of almost three miles of roadway, improving the interchanges, and constructing several new bridges, including new structures over the Neshaminy Creek and over rail lines near the Penndel exit. The Route 1 project is on Phase 2. The second phase will widen the highway.

In addition, there could be periodic lane restrictions Monday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the eastbound or westbound lanes of Street Road between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way in Bensalem Township.

The $110.8 million second phase of the project is being carried out by Chester County-based contractor JD Eckman Inc.

A proposed third phase would begin at the Penndel/Business Route 1 Interchange and continue just past the Pine Street (Route 413) overpass in Middletown Township. The full details of that phase have not been released. PennDOT has not included a proposed construction start date or cost estimate.
