The Middletown Township Police Department has been reaccredited.

The reaccreditation lasts through December 2023 and was granted recently by the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (PLEAC).

The municipal police department first gained accreditation in 2008.

Middletown Township police are authorized to have 59-sworn officers and about 10 non-uniformed staff.

To be reaccredited, the agency had to meet a number of standards.

The Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association said accreditation can reduce departments’ risk of exposure to lawsuits, establish a framework for evaluating agency practices and procedures, increase employee confidence in agency, and develop improved methods for providing services to the community.

“This accreditation confirms what our residents have known all along,” Middletown Township Board of Supervisors Chairperson Tom Tosti said in a statement. “MTPD is one of the best law enforcement agencies in the county.”

The township recognized officers Megan Freer and Melissa Robison, Sgt. Bob Weber, Lt. Ken Mellus, Captain Pete Feeney, and Chief Joesph Bartorilla for working to gain reaccreditation.

The Bristol Township and Falls Township police departments also have PLEAC accreditation.

Of the state’s more than 1,100 law enforcement agencies, only 127 maintain accredited status through the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Program.
