A former Bucks County attorney who was involved in one of the most high-profile local trials in recent years is on former President Donald Trump’s defense team.
Julieanne Bateman, an Upper Bucks County native and daughter of Bucks County President Judge Wallace Bateman, sat in the U.S. Senate chamber in Washington D.C. Tuesday for the opening of the trial against Trump for his alleged role in inciting the insurrection that led to several deaths at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, January 6.

Trump was impeached last month for a historic second time. While his impeachment came during his time as president, the trial is taking place weeks into President Joe Biden’s term.
Bateman is on the defense team led by former Republican Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor, who also served for a short time as the acting Pennsylvania attorney general while working for disgraced Attorney General Kathleen Kane, a Democrat; civil and criminal defense attorney David Schoen; and Philadelphia-based defense and personal injury lawyer Michael van der Veen.
Castor, Bateman, and van der Veen work at the firm van der Veen, O’Neill, Hartshorn, and Levin.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the team has spent hours working on Trump’s defense leading up to the start of the trial.
Bateman worked in 2019 with nationally-known Philadelphia attorney Charles Peruto to defend Sean Kratz, a Philadelphia man sent to prison for life along with his cousin Cosmo DiNardo for the deaths of several young men in 2017. The high-profile case and trial gained national attention.

Bateman’s biography on the website of the law firm that employs her states that she was a background in criminal law and the child welfare system in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Philadelphia counties. She previously worked as an assistant district attorney in Franklin County and clerked for Bucks County Judge Robert Baldi, who heard the Trump campaign’s local election 2020 case.
Several years back, Bateman worked at Perkasie-based law firm Grim, Biehn, and Thatcher.
Bateman is familiar with Washington D.C. because she attended George Washington University. She earned her law degree from the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America in the nation’s capital city.
