Just minutes from the Levittown area, the New Jersey State House has increased security due to the nationwide threat of domestic terrorist attacks.

New Jersey authorities have confirmed they are increasing security measures in and around the Garden State’s capitol complex following an FBI advisory to law enforcement warning of potential threats following last week’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

The New Jersey State House and surrounding state office buildings employ many Levittown-area residents who commute across the Delaware River.

Jared Maples, the director of New Jersey’s Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, said in a statement that authorities of all levels are in regular contact to “monitor the evolving situation.”

“We are taking proactive steps to halt possible attempts at violence,” he said.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said during a press briefing earlier this week that authorities were undertaking precautions for the coming days.

“Our police department is working at this moment with the N.J. State Police, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office as part of a coordinated plan to ensure our safety if any protesters stray beyond the First Amendment right to peaceful protest,” Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora said in a statement.

The New Jersey State House is undergoing renovations that include upgrades to security. The building is the third-oldest state capitol building still in use in the nation.
